Richmond is built on an island in the mouth of the Fraser, almost entirely at or barely above sea level, protected by a dyke system that rings the whole municipality. It is the flattest city in the region and the foggiest, and both of those show up in small ways when you order here.
It is also the closest major community to Vancouver International, which means a meaningful share of residents work airport shifts. As in any airport city, that changes when a parcel can actually be handed over.
Airport shifts and delivery windows
Vancouver International sits inside Richmond, and the businesses feeding it run around the clock: cargo, ground handling, catering, maintenance, hotels and freight. A large share of residents work rotating or overnight shifts as a result.
The failure mode is predictable. A carrier attempts mid afternoon, the recipient is asleep after a night shift or three hours into a day shift, and the parcel goes back to a depot with hours that suit neither.
A safe place instruction naming a specific location removes most of it, and ordering consumables before you run out removes the rest. A spare pack of replacement coils in a drawer turns a missed attempt from a problem into an inconvenience.
Fog, damp and what it does to hardware
Richmond is noticeably foggier than the rest of the Lower Mainland because of its position at the river mouth, and the whole region is wet rather than freezing through winter. Moisture rather than cold is the hardware problem here.
A device carried in a damp pocket collects water around the charging port and the pod contacts, which produces intermittent firing or a refusal to charge. It looks exactly like a hardware failure and usually is not one.
Dry the port and the contacts with a cotton bud and leave it several hours before charging. Our why a vape stops hitting walkthrough covers the other causes in order of likelihood.
Provincial rules that apply to your order
British Columbia moved ahead of Ottawa on this. The province capped nicotine in vaping products at 20 mg/mL in 2020, before the federal government adopted the same ceiling nationally, and it restricted flavoured products other than tobacco to age restricted retailers at the same time.
It also applies a 20 percent provincial tax on vaping products. That is why the same device costs more in Richmond than it would in Alberta or Ontario, and it is a genuine tax difference rather than a retailer markup. Any comparison against out of province pricing has to account for it.
The minimum age here is 19. The federal framework under the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act applies on top of the provincial rules, and we track our reading of both in vaping laws by province.
A flat city and what that simplifies
Richmond has no hills, no escarpment and no elevation difference worth mentioning. Snow is rare and does not linger, and there is no equivalent of the Burnaby Mountain problem where one part of a city behaves differently from the rest.
That makes delivery unusually consistent. Transit times are the same across the municipality and weather days are rare, which is not something that can be said of most cities on this site.
What does vary is building type. City Centre has become a dense cluster of towers, while Steveston and the western neighbourhoods remain low rise.
Where we deliver across Richmond
Postal codes here begin with V6 and V7, and we cover the whole island.
- Steveston, historic fishing village, low rise
- City Centre, a dense cluster of towers around the transit line
- Hamilton, east, closest to the mainland
- Broadmoor, residential, central
- Seafair, west, largely houses
- East Cambie, north, mixed residential and industrial
Vancouver, Delta and New Westminster are covered on the same service. Richmond has about 210,000 residents.
The provincial tax and the case for refilling
British Columbia applies a 20 percent tax on vaping products on top of ordinary sales tax, which is why the same device costs more here than it would in Alberta or Ontario.
Because the tax is proportional rather than fixed, it makes moving off disposables a larger saving here than in an untaxed province. You are taxed on a smaller recurring spend once the device is a one off purchase.
Our refillable versus disposable vapes comparison sets out what refilling involves and vaping versus smoking cost calculator turns your own consumption into an annual figure against what you were spending before.
City Centre towers and parcel rooms
Richmond City Centre has densified sharply over the past two decades and is now a genuine tower district rather than a suburban core. Delivery there is a building access question rather than a distance one.
Put the unit number in the address line rather than only in the notes, since some carrier systems truncate the notes field. Add the buzzer code. If your building has a parcel room rather than a concierge, say so.
Steveston, Seafair and Broadmoor are largely houses and low rise where a standard attempt succeeds without any of that.
Switching from cigarettes here
British Columbia restricts most flavours other than tobacco to age restricted retailers, so general retail carries a narrow range and specialists carry a wide one.
What suits leaving cigarettes is a tight draw device at a higher salt nicotine strength, which sits in our vape pods and vape kits ranges. Large sub ohm setups need far lower nicotine and tend to leave a recent smoker vaping constantly without satisfaction.
Our best vape for beginners in Canada guide explains the reasoning, nicotine strength calculator suggests a strength from your previous habit, and Health Canada quit smoking resources publishes independent support with nothing to sell you.
Storing things in a humid climate
Humidity is higher here than almost anywhere in the region, and it affects anything stored in a dried form rather than a liquid one.
Dried material takes on moisture in a damp room, which changes how it behaves and at the extreme invites mould. Anything in our smokable hemp range belongs in an airtight container, and a two part humidity pack holds the level steady for very little money.
Liquids are less affected but not immune. An opened bottle in a warm damp room degrades faster than one in a cupboard. Our guide to does vape juice expire covers the difference between aged and spoiled.
What to keep at home
In a city with a lot of shift workers, a buffer at home is worth more than it is elsewhere, because a missed delivery is harder to recover from when depot hours clash with your working ones.
A spare pack of replacement coils covers the most common thing that stops a refillable device working. A spare bottle of liquid covers the second and a spare cable the third.
The cable point matters more in a damp climate than a dry one, because connectors corrode faster in humidity and a failing cable presents exactly like a failing device.
Hardware for an airport city
A lot of people here work in environments where a large conspicuous device is impractical, and where a shift runs longer than a compact battery comfortably lasts.
That points at something in the middle: a pod device from our vape pods range with enough battery for a full shift rather than the smallest thing available. A tighter draw is also more discreet, which matters in a workplace setting.
Sealing matters here too. A well fitted pod handles a damp pocket and a pressurised cabin better than an open sub ohm tank does, and it leaks less when carried.
Living next to an international airport
More people here travel regularly than in most cities, so this is worth getting right once rather than improvising at a checkpoint.
Anything containing a lithium cell travels in cabin baggage and never in checked luggage, covering devices, spare cells and power banks alike. That is the position set out by Transport Canada lithium battery rules. Spare cells need individual protection against short circuit, so a plastic case or tape over the terminals.
Empty tanks before flying, because cabin pressure changes push liquid past seals that hold perfectly at ground level. Using a device on board is prohibited by every airline. Our guide to taking a vape on a plane covers the rest.
Local shops against ordering
Richmond has specialist retailers, which under BC rules is where most flavours are available anyway. If you want to hold a device before buying, that is the route.
Where ordering wins is consumables. No storefront stocks every coil for every device, and the exact part for something bought two years ago is far more likely to sit in a central warehouse.
The provincial tax applies either way, so ordering does not avoid it. What it can do is give you access to quantities that reduce the pre tax cost per millilitre.
For most people the honest pattern is both, and it is worth saying that plainly rather than pretending online always wins.
Delivery area by area
Richmond is flat and compact, so transit is consistent across the island. What varies is the building type rather than the distance.
| Area | Typical address | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| Steveston | Historic village, low rise | Straightforward |
| City Centre | Dense tower cluster | Unit number in the address line, buzzer code |
| Hamilton | East, closest to the mainland | Straightforward |
| Broadmoor | Central, residential | Straightforward |
| Seafair | West, largely houses | Straightforward |
| East Cambie | North, mixed residential and industrial | Safe place instruction worth adding |
| Vancouver, Delta, New Westminster | Mixed | Same service and transit band |
Orders placed on a business day are dispatched within 24 hours and tracking reaches you at the first carrier scan. Carrier detail is on our shipping and delivery page and damage in transit on our returns policy page. We ship within Canada only.
Common questions
I work airport shifts and keep missing deliveries. What helps?
A safe place instruction naming a specific location rather than something general, and ordering consumables before you run out rather than after. Richmond has an unusually high share of residents on rotating and overnight shifts tied to airport operations.
Why does my device stop charging after a foggy week?
Moisture around the charging port and the pod contacts. Richmond is the foggiest part of the region and the winter is wet rather than freezing, so damp rather than cold is the local hardware problem. Dry the port with a cotton bud and leave it several hours.
Do you deliver to Steveston and City Centre?
Yes, to the whole island, along with Vancouver, Delta and New Westminster on the same service. Richmond is flat with no elevation difference, so transit times are consistent across the municipality.
Why do vapes cost more in Richmond than in Alberta?
British Columbia applies a 20 percent tax on vaping products on top of ordinary sales tax. Alberta applies none. Because the tax is proportional, moving off disposables saves more here in absolute terms than it would in an untaxed province.
What is the minimum vaping age?
19, since British Columbia sets it above the federal floor of 18. We operate an age gate on every visit and verify age before any order is dispatched.
Can I take my device on a flight from YVR?
In cabin baggage only, never in checked luggage, because of the lithium cell. Spare cells need individual protection against short circuit. Empty tanks before flying, since cabin pressure changes push liquid past seals that hold at ground level.
