Sealed pods and refillable pods

A sealed prefilled pod arrives filled and closed. You click it into the battery, use it, and replace it. There is no liquid to handle and no coil to see. The convenience is real and so is the cost: you are paying for the coil, the plastic and the liquid every single time, and you can only buy the flavours that manufacturer makes.

A refillable pod arrives empty. You fill it from any bottle you like, use it until the coil tires, then either replace the whole pod or just the coil inside it depending on the design. It costs a fraction as much to run and opens the entire vape juice range to you, at the price of a little handling.

The decision usually comes down to honesty about effort. Refilling takes about thirty seconds every day or two. If you know you will resent that, sealed pods will make you happier even though they cost more. If you do not mind, refillable is substantially cheaper and gives far more flavour freedom.

Resistance and what it does

Pod resistance is printed in ohms on the pod or the box, and it sets how the device behaves. Higher resistance, usually 1.0 ohm and above, draws less power, gives a tighter cigarette like draw and suits higher nicotine strengths. Lower resistance, around 0.6 ohm and below, draws more power, gives a warmer airier draw with much more vapour, and needs a lower nicotine strength.

Matching strength to resistance is the thing people get wrong. Resistance also drives battery drain. If you have changed to a lower resistance pod and your battery suddenly needs charging twice a day, that is expected physics rather than a failing cell.

Priming a new pod properly

Priming means saturating the cotton inside the coil before the coil ever gets hot. Skipping it is the single most common way people destroy a new pod within minutes, and it cannot be undone.

The procedure is simple. Put two or three drops of liquid directly onto any exposed cotton you can see through the coil openings. Fill the pod. Click it into the battery and then leave it alone for five to ten minutes so the cotton wicks fully. Take two or three gentle draws with no power if your device allows it, then start vaping normally.

The first firing on dry cotton scorches it permanently. No amount of liquid afterwards will lift that burnt taste, because the cotton itself is carbonised. Ten minutes of patience is the cheapest maintenance in vaping.

Why pods leak, and how to stop it

Leaking is the most reported pod problem and it is usually caused by the user rather than the pod. Four things cause nearly all of it.

• Overfilling. Pods need an air gap to maintain the pressure balance that holds liquid in. Filling to the absolute brim removes it. Leave a few millimetres.
• Liquid in the central airway. When filling, keep the nozzle against the side of the fill port, not down the central chimney. Liquid poured into the airway goes straight to your mouth and out of the base.
• Hard draws. A sharp pull creates a pressure drop that pulls liquid past the seals. Slower draws genuinely reduce leaking.
• Temperature and altitude change. Air in the pod expands when it warms or when cabin pressure drops, pushing liquid out. Empty pods before flying, as our guide to taking a vape on a plane explains.

A little condensation in the battery well is normal rather than a leak. Wipe it out with a tissue every few days and it will not become a problem.

Why pods burn out early

A pod that should last a fortnight but dies in three days almost always has one of four causes, and none of them is a faulty pod.

The first is skipped priming, covered above. The second is liquid that is too thick, since a high VG liquid cannot wick fast enough through a tight pod coil and the cotton runs dry under the coil while liquid still sits in the reservoir. Stay at 50/50 for pods. The third is sweetened flavours, which caramelise onto the coil and shorten its life dramatically. The fourth is chain vaping, which does not give the cotton time to reabsorb between draws.

Compatibility and buying the right pod

Pods are not interchangeable between manufacturers, and often not even between generations from the same manufacturer. A pod that looks identical can have a different magnet position or contact layout. Always buy the pod named for your exact device model.

Before committing to any pod system, check that its pods are genuinely stocked in Canada. Pod systems are small by design, which means capacity is the constraint. A typical pod holds 2 mL and a typical battery holds somewhere between 800 mAh and 1500 mAh, and a moderate vaper will empty both inside a day.

Three habits stretch that. Carrying a second filled pod is the simplest, since swapping takes seconds and costs nothing beyond the spare. Keeping the battery topped up opportunistically rather than waiting for it to die avoids the dead afternoon, and USB C devices gain a useful amount of charge in ten minutes. Flavour, pod material and how long a taste lasts

Pods are usually made from PCTG or a similar food safe plastic, and plastic absorbs flavour compounds over time. That is why a pod that has held a strong menthol liquid will taint a delicate fruit liquid afterwards, sometimes for days.

The practical answer is to dedicate pods to flavour families rather than trying to clean them. If you alternate between a dessert liquid and a menthol one, keep two pods and swap. Rinsing helps a little but never removes the ghost entirely, and washing a pod with a built in coil usually kills the coil anyway.

Flavour perception also dulls with continuous exposure to the same liquid, an effect people regularly mistake for a failing pod.
