CBD Vapes

Prefilled 510 cartridges, pods, disposable pens and bottled e liquid. The fastest onset of any format in this range, using the same hardware as nicotine vaping. We make no health claims about these products.

CBD vapes are inhaled cannabinoid products: prefilled 510 cartridges, sealed and refillable pods, disposable pens and bottled e liquid. What separates them from the rest of this range is speed. An inhaled product reaches circulation through the lungs rather than through the digestive system, so onset is fast and you can tell quickly whether you have had enough.

That speed is the reason people choose the format, and the hardware side of it is exactly the same hardware we sell for nicotine vaping. This page covers the formats, the fluid inside them, the hardware that suits each, and the specific things that go wrong with cannabinoid fluids that do not go wrong with ordinary e liquid.

The four formats

Prefilled 510 cartridges are the most common. A small glass or plastic tank with a coil and a standard screw thread, filled and sealed at manufacture, designed to screw onto any 510 thread batteries. You replace the cartridge and keep the battery.

Sealed pods work the same way but click into a proprietary battery rather than screwing on, which ties you to one manufacturer. Disposable pens combine a sealed cartridge and a battery in one body and are discarded together, which makes them the simplest and the most wasteful.

Bottled e liquid containing cannabinoids is the fourth, and it goes into ordinary refillable hardware from our vape pods or vape tanks ranges. It is the cheapest per millilitre and the most flexible, and it demands that you match the fluid to the coil properly.

What is actually in the cartridge

Cartridge contents are not the same as nicotine e liquid. Where an ordinary liquid is mostly propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine, a cannabinoid cartridge is typically a much thicker preparation built around distillate or another concentrated extract.

Because that base is viscous, something is usually added to make it flow and wick. Terpenes are the common choice and are often the same aromatic compounds removed during refinement, reintroduced afterwards. Some products use a thinning agent instead, and a supplier who states what it is deserves more trust than one who does not.

Thickness is why a cartridge that works perfectly in a warm room can refuse to produce anything on a cold morning. It is also why cartridge hardware uses wider intake holes and, in many cases, ceramic coils rather than the cotton used in ordinary vaping.

Matching hardware to fluid

The single most common problem in this category is a mismatch between a thick fluid and hardware designed for thin liquid. Ordinary pod hardware built for 50/50 nicotine liquid will struggle badly with a viscous cannabinoid preparation, and the result is a burnt taste within a few draws.

For prefilled cartridges, a variable voltage battery is worth the small extra cost because cartridges vary so much. Start at the lowest setting and step up only until it produces properly. Too much voltage scorches a thin fluid instantly and wastes an expensive cartridge.

Preheat is genuinely useful here rather than a gimmick, because it warms thick contents enough to wick. Two or three seconds is plenty. Our 510 thread battery guide covers voltage, preheat and the connection problems that get mistaken for faulty cartridges.

Formats compared

The table compares the four routes on cost, flexibility and what hardware each needs.

If you are starting out, a 510 battery and a cartridge is the most sensible combination, because neither half locks you into the other. Disposables are convenient but carry the same lithium recycling obligation as anything in our disposable vapes range.

Why onset differs from other formats

Inhaled compounds cross from the lungs into the bloodstream directly, bypassing the digestive system and the liver first pass that slows swallowed products down. That is a simple anatomical difference rather than a claim about effectiveness.

The practical consequence is control. With a fast format you can take a small amount, assess, and decide, rather than waiting a long time and guessing as you would with our CBD edibles range. That makes it easier to avoid taking more than you intended.

The trade off is that you are inhaling something, and inhaling anything other than air carries some risk. We are not going to pretend otherwise. Health Canada guidance on vaping publishes the federal position on vaping generally and is worth reading.

Cartridge problems and what causes them

A cartridge that produces nothing is usually a connection issue rather than an empty one. Overtightening pushes the centre pin flush and breaks contact, and a recessed pin on the cartridge does the same. Loosen a quarter turn, or gently lift the pin with a fingernail.

A cartridge that tastes burnt from the first draw has usually been fired at too high a voltage for its coil, or has been used when the contents were too cold to wick. Start low, use preheat briefly, and let a cold cartridge warm to room temperature first.

Leaking is generally pressure and temperature rather than a defect. Store cartridges upright, draw slowly, keep them out of hot cars, and do not overtighten. Persistent leaking despite all of that is a manufacturing problem and our contact the team team will sort it out.

What to look for before buying

A batch number and an independent certificate of analysis matched to it is the first thing. For inhaled products the certificate should cover residual solvents and heavy metals as well as cannabinoid content, because you are heating and breathing whatever is in there.

A stated ingredient list is second. A cartridge that names its extract type and says what was used to thin it, if anything, is being straightforward. One that lists only a strain name and a percentage is not telling you enough.

Hardware quality is third and is easy to overlook because the cartridge looks like a commodity. Ceramic coils, quality glass and a well made seal are what separate a cartridge that performs evenly to the last millilitre from one that leaks and burns at the halfway point.

Cold weather and thick cartridges

This deserves its own section in Canada, because it accounts for a large share of the problems people report between November and March. Cannabinoid cartridge contents thicken sharply as temperature drops, and below about ten degrees many will barely move through a coil at all.

The symptoms look like hardware failure. The cartridge produces nothing, or produces a thin wisp, or tastes burnt because the coil is heating with almost no fluid reaching it. Nothing is broken. Bring the cartridge to room temperature, preheat briefly, and it will behave normally again.

Practical habits help. Carry a cartridge in an inside pocket rather than an outer one or a bag, where body heat keeps it workable. Do not leave one in a car overnight in winter. Use preheat for two or three seconds rather than drawing harder, since drawing harder on a cold cartridge pulls air past the fluid rather than through it. The same physics affects battery capacity, which we cover in vaping in cold weather.

Choosing between this and other formats

Pick an inhaled format when speed and control matter to you, or when you already own the hardware and want to keep the routine you have. It is also the most portable option that still lets you adjust in small increments.

Pick something else when inhaling is the thing you want to avoid. CBD oil gives finer measurement by the drop and no inhalation at all. CBD edibles is the most discreet and needs no equipment, at the cost of slow and variable onset. CBD drinks and teas sits between them.

There is no single right answer and plenty of people use more than one. What matters is keeping track of the total when the formats behave so differently from each other, which is easier to lose sight of than it sounds.

Where these products sit in Canadian law

Two separate frameworks apply here, which makes this category more complicated than most. The hardware and anything containing nicotine falls under Tobacco and Vaping Products Act, which caps retail nicotine at 20 mg/mL. The cannabinoid content falls under the Cannabis Act, which regulates CBD whether it came from hemp or from cannabis.

Legal retail sale of cannabis products in Canada runs through provincially authorised retailers, and health claims about cannabinoid products are not permitted without authorisation. Health Canada on cannabinoids sets out the federal position directly.

Provincial rules on vaping products generally are tracked in vaping laws by province. We describe what we stock accurately and make no health claims about any of it.

Ordering, travel and delivery

We operate an age gate and ship only inside Canada. Carriers and timings are on our shipping and delivery page, faults on our returns policy page. Opened consumables cannot be returned unless faulty.

When flying, batteries and anything containing a lithium cell must travel in cabin baggage rather than checked luggage, as Transport Canada lithium battery rules requires. Detach cartridges from batteries so nothing can fire accidentally in a bag, and expect cabin pressure changes to push fluid past seals in a full cartridge. Our guide to taking a vape on a plane covers the practicalities.

The rest of the range covers the same extracts in other formats, and our full CBD and hemp range lists everything together.

Common questions

Why is my CBD cartridge not producing anything?

Usually a connection rather than an empty cartridge. Overtightening pushes the centre pin flush and breaks contact, and some cartridges have a recessed pin. Loosen a quarter turn or gently lift the pin. Cold contents that are too thick to wick are the other common cause.

What voltage should I use with a CBD cartridge?

Start at the lowest setting your battery offers and step up only until it produces properly. Cartridge contents vary enormously in thickness, and too much voltage scorches a thin fluid within a few draws and wastes the cartridge.

Why is the fluid thicker than normal e liquid?

Because it is built around a concentrated extract such as distillate rather than around propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine. Something is usually added to make it flow, often terpenes. That thickness is why cartridge hardware uses wider intake holes and frequently ceramic coils.

Can I use a CBD cartridge with any 510 battery?

Mechanically yes, since the 510 thread is a standard. Whether it performs well depends on the voltage the battery delivers and whether it has a preheat function, which is why a variable voltage battery is worth the small extra cost in this category.

Why does onset feel faster than with edibles?

Inhaled compounds pass from the lungs into the bloodstream directly, bypassing the digestive system and the liver first pass that slows swallowed products. That is an anatomical difference rather than a claim about effectiveness, and it means you can assess and stop rather than waiting and guessing.

Are CBD vapes legal in Canada?

Two frameworks apply. Hardware and anything containing nicotine falls under the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act. The cannabinoid content falls under the Cannabis Act, which regulates CBD whether from hemp or cannabis. Legal retail runs through provincially authorised retailers and health claims are not permitted.
